COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Old Trafford, day one (close): Lancashire 206, Sussex 9-0
Champions Sussex dominated the opening day at Old Trafford, closing only 197 behind at 9-0 after bowling out Lancashire for a mere 206. Master spinner Mushtaq Ahmed returned for Sussex but it was young off-spinner Ollie Rayner who shone, with only the third five-wicket haul of his career. Left-arm seamer Jason Lewry did the early damage, removing Lou Vincent and Iain Sutcliffe with successive balls. Steven Croft top-scored with six fours in 46 before he edged to first slip. Croft shared in the highest partnership of the innings, a stand of 59 with South African Kolpak batsman Francois du Plessis. That was broken early in the afternoon session when Rayner forced Du Plessis to top edge an attempted sweep and the spinner took the return catch. Dominic Cork shared a useful 53 with Luke Sutton, who was soon left stranded on 45 as the innings quickly subsided. Cork whacked Rayner over long on for six before the players went off for bad light following an appeal from the former England all-rounder that he could not see the ball. This followed a delivery from Lewry that was obscured by a dark hospitality window at the Stretford End. The players returned to the field 10 minutes later with a white tablecloth blocking the window, but Cork was soon lbw to Rayner. Mushtaq, playing his first game for six weeks, got a solitary scalp when he trapped Keedy leg before and Sajid Mahmood was the last man to go when he was caught by Robin Martin-Jenkins at long on to complete Rayner's five. Sussex made a safe reply before bad light ended proceedings for the day in the seventh over.
