Richard Grant and Graham Rees put on 120, while Mike Powell (36 not out) and Mark Wallace (26 not out) shared an undefeated partnership of 62 at stumps.

Essex had started the day on 139-5 but were all out within the session, Jason Gillespie leading the way with 4-32.
