Warwicks ease to win over Leics

NatWest Pro 40 D2, Grace Road:
Warwickshire beat Leicestershire 81 runs

Warwickshire put in an impressive performance to beat Leicestershire in their Pro40 Division Two match.

Neil Carter hit 78 from 55 balls, including 10 fours and five sixes, and Darren Maddy scored 56 off 42 to help Warwickshire compile 276-7.

The hosts struggled to keep up with the run rate and the pressure to do so saw them lose regular wickets.

Ant Botha missed out on a hat-trick but took 5-43 for the visitors as Leicestershire were all out for 195.

Warwickshire were rarely at risk of losing as an opening stand of 91 in 12 overs between Carter and Jonathan Trott quickly put them in command.

Trott made 22 but it was left-hander Carter who was the commanding presence of their partnership.

Carter was finally out when a Tom Smith delivery hit the inside edge of his bat and then rebounded on to his stumps via his thigh pad.

But that only brought in Jim Troughton (48) and ex-Leicestershire player Maddy and they put on 96 in 13 overs.

Left-arm spinner Claude Henderson took four wickets for 12 runs in as many overs to reduce Warwickshire from 207-2 to 224-6.

Botha then hit 17 off the final over to end a late Warwickshire flurry and set a total that Leicestershire always found too troublesome.

The home side's batsmen all got starts and threatened promising partnerships only for each to fail in building a match-winning innings.
