Batty stars in Worcestershire win

County Championship D2, Lord's (day three): Worcestershire 361 & 105-0 beat Middlesex 300 & 164

A Gareth Batty-inspired Worcestershire hammered Middlesex by 10 wickets to boost their chances of promotion as they went top of Division Two.

Worcs' first innings ended on 361 at Lord's, a lead of 61, before they bowled Middlesex out for only 164.

Dawid Malan (52) and Ben Scott (58) were the only batsmen to provide any resistance as spinner Batty tore through their line-up, taking 5-33.

Daryl Mitchell (48) and Stephen Moore (55) raced to their target of 104.

Worcestershire climbed above Warwickshire in the County Championship table, but their rivals have a game in hand.

After Middlesex wrapped up Worcs' first innings they got off to a terrible start, with captain Ed Joyce - used as a makeshift opener - caught behind off Kabir Ali for a duck.

He then snapped up the wicket of Nick Compton for three to leave the hosts reeling on 4-2, and it quickly got much worse.

Eoin Morgan was unluckily run out for six after Ali deflected Owais Shah's drive on to the stumps before Shah edged Gareth Andrew to Graeme Hick at slip and Middlesex were 21-4.

They desperately needed a partnership and Malan and Scott stepped up, putting on 113 in 25 overs as they gave their team hope of setting Worcs a decent total.

But the introduction of former England spinner Batty changed everything and he had Scott caught at slip, Shaun Udal (0) caught off a top edge and Malan caught and bowled to swing the match in his side's favour.

He also claimed the wickets of Murali Kartik and Danny Evans, before Andrew clean bowled Steve Finn to leave Worcs needing only 104 to win.

Moore and Mitchell both crashed 11 fours as they raced to their target after just 17 overs.
