County Championship D1, Trent Bridge (day two, stumps): Nottinghamshire 213, 146-2 v Yorkshire 161
Nottinghamshire took charge of their Division One championship match against Yorkshire as they opened up a 198-run lead at Trent Bridge. Starting the day on 72-5, the visitors were dismissed for 161 as Charlie Shreck (5-58) and Mark Ealham (3-17) tore through the Tykes' batting order. Matthew Hoggard had opener Matthew Wood lbw for 16 to leave Notts at 22-1. A 103-run stand between Bilal Shafayat (62) and Adam Voges (56 not out) put Notts on top before Shafayat fell late. Shreck made the most of a slow pitch in favourable swinging conditions, dispatching Gerard Brophy, Adil Rashid and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, whose stubborn 18 helped push the toal towards modest respectability, along with 17 from Deon Kruis and a watchful 32 from Tim Bresnan. Discarded England seamer Hoggard removed Wood to give Yorkshire an early breakthrough in Nottinghamshire's second innings, but Shafayat and Wagh offered minimal chances as they extended the home side's lead. Shafayat eventually fell in bizarre circumstances when his fiercely-struck drive ricocheted off Hoggard, who could not hold on to the catch, but the ball looped to Rana at mid-on. "He (Hoggard) got a hand, a bit of leg on it - and then it looped up straight to the man coming in from mid-on," said Shafayat. "But that's how it goes sometimes. I don't think I could really have played it any different - that was about as hard as I could have hit it, and on another day it would have been four."
