Bears put Middlesex on back foot

County Championship D2, Uxbridge, day two (close):
Warwickshire 393 v Middlesex 70-3

Warwickshire had Middlesex in a spot of trouble at stumps on day two of the Championship match in Uxbridge.

Neil Carter and Ant Botha shared an eighth wicket stand of 90 in just 114 balls as the visitors went from an overnight 271-5 to total 393.

And they then enhanced their strong position by reducing Middlesex to 70-3.

Botha spilled an easy chance at third slip when Middlesex skipper Ed Joyce had not troubled the scorers, but the left-hander fell soon afterwards.

Darren Maddy had him caught at the wicket for 12 with the first ball of his second over as Middlesex reached 45-3 at one point, before Owais Shah's unbeaten 25 relieved some of the pressure.

First to go for the hosts was Nick Compton, who fell second ball without scoring playing around a straight delivery from Chris Woakes and was trapped leg before wicket.

He was soon followed by Dawid Malan, who was slightly unlucky to see a Chris Martin inswinger come off his pads and hit his off stump.

At the start of the day, Jim Troughton advanced to 88 before Tim Murtagh (4-66) swung a delivery into his pads.

But Carter (67) and Botha (54) played some enterprising shots as Warwickshire fell just short of their fifth batting point.
