Sussex laid low by Law's century

County Championship D1, Hove, day two (close):
Sussex 253 v Lancashire 382-8

Match scorecard

Stuart Law hit his 100th century in all forms of cricket, ending the day on 156 not out as Lancashire finished with a 129-run lead against Sussex at Hove.

It was the seventh ton against Sussex for Law, who batted throughout the day and has now notched up 728 runs at Hove in nine innings in all competitions.

It helped Lancashire to 382-8 in reply to county champions Sussex's 253.

Earlier, England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff had fallen for just six runs, caught at mid-wicket off a poor shot.

Having failed to take a wicket in 15 overs when he started his County Championship comeback from injury on Sunday, Flintoff survived just 13 more deliveries before being caught by young substitute fielder Will Adkin off Ollie Rayner's bowling.

It could scupper his hopes of an recall to the England side for the South Africa series, though he showed no signs of injury in bowling economically in the Sussex innings and the selectors will be hoping he can maintain his fitness with an eye on a call-up later in the summer.

It was just one aspect of an intriguing second day in the match between Sussex and the team they just pipped to keep the Championship title last year.

A swarm of bees flying in their hundreds across the seaside ground held up play for over two minutes while players dived full length on the ground, taking cover.

One of them was Lancashire left-arm spinner and putative nightwatchman Gary Keedy, who became an unlikely batting hero for his side with a career-high first-class score of 64 in a splendid partnership of 160 with Law, whose century came up in 245 minutes off 173 balls.

Law, who will be 40 in October, survived one chance before tea - dropped by Jason Lewry on 101 - and then enjoyed another life on 128 when he was dropped by Sussex skipper Chris Adams at second slip.

Glenn Chapple will be hoping to provide support for the Australia-born batsman on day three, the seamer unbeaten on 26.
