Twenty20 Cup, Taunton: Somerset 212-8 beat Worcestershire 145 by 67 runs Match scorecard
Marcus Trescothick's superb 57-ball 105 set Somerset up for a 67-run Twenty20 Cup victory over Worcestershire. The former England opener smashed 15 fours and three sixes at Taunton as Somerset recovered in style after losing Justin Langer first ball. Chasing 213 to win, the Royals crashed to 25-4 and were never in contention. Stephen Moore top-scored with 38 in a total of 145 all out, with left-arm spinner Arul Suppiah the pick of the hosts' bowlers, claiming 3-36. Trescothick took 20 off the fourth over, sent down by Simon Jones, with two fours and two sixes. Dominating a second-wicket stand of 83 in 37 balls with Peter Trego, the powerful left-hander reached his half-century off just 18 deliveries with some majestic hitting and some delicate touch shots. Once Trego had departed, Blackwell (32 off 23) matched Trescothick shot for shot and Craig Kieswetter also produced some lusty blows in his 15-ball knock of 28. Kabir Ali took three wickets, including that of Trescothick, at the death to boost his figures to 4-44, but by then the Sabres were assured of a bumper score. Any realistic hope Worcestershire had disappeared in the first two overs of their innings as Vikram Solanki was yorked by Charl Willoughby and Graeme Hick skied a catch to mid-off off Mark Turner. A procession of wickets followed and when Moore arrived at the crease at number six, the task facing him was nigh impossible.
