Twenty20 Cup, Derby: Derbyshire 122-3 beat Leicestershire 118-6 by seven wickets Leicestershire Match scorecard
Leicestershire's miserable Twenty20 Cup run continued when they crashed to a
seventh consecutive defeat as local rivals Derbyshire won easily at Derby. The Foxes were condemned to finish bottom in the North Division after another turgid batting display left the Phantoms chasing just 119 to win. An unbeaten 42 from Wavell Hinds to follow his 2-14 and 35 by Rikki Clarke gave the hosts a seven-wicket victory. The win, with two overs to spare, keeps Derbyshire's quarter-final bid alive. Leicestershire made two changes to the team that lost to Durham on Friday night but they never looked like registering a first victory in the competition. Although HD Ackerman made an unbeaten 49 off 44 balls, he batted through his side's limp innings which included only 11 boundaries. Although the strong wind blew over a marquee, it did not appear to affect the bowlers who took an early grip on the game when Jacques du Toit edged to slip in
the second over. Boeta Dippenaar's laboured innings of 12 from 22 balls ended when he drove Hinds to long-on and the Foxes suffered a major blow when Paul Nixon skied his
fifth ball to cover. The Foxes managed only 14 off the last four overs and although Derbyshire lost both openers in the first six overs, a one-sided contest provided little in the way of entertainment for a sparse crowd. Hinds drove Sam Cliff for six and Clarke also hit the young seamer over the deep mid-wicket boundary as the third-wicket pair added 65 in nine overs. Clarke lost his middle stump trying to hit Cliff for another six but James Pipe ended the game in style with successive fours off Jigar Naik to leave Leicestershire holding the wooden spoon.
