Middlesex secured a five-wicket win against Surrey to claim a fourth successive victory in the Twenty20 Cup.

Surrey opener James Benning (50no) top scored for the visitors, but failed to hit a boundary after the second over.

Middlesex were 7-2 after two overs, with Billy Godleman lbw from Pedro Collins and Andrew Strauss playing a Jade Dernbach ball on to his stumps.

But a 57-run stand between captain Ed Joyce (47) and Dawid Malan (41no) saw Middlesex home with an over to spare.

Joyce hit three fours and a six before scooping one to Mark Ramprakash off Abdul Razzaq with three overs to go, but Malan stroked the winning runs with a four to long off off the last ball of the 19th over.

Surrey's total of 141-7 had always looked like it was going to leave their bowlers with a little bit too much to do, as they failed to up their run rate and stagnated towards the end of their innings, managing just 20 runs from their last three overs.

Scott Newman was out for a duck in the first over, edging the impressive Dirk Nannes to wicket-keeper Ben Scott.

Nannes finished with excellent figures of 2-14, as he also picked up the wicket of Surrey captain Ramprakash, batting at number seven, for six in the penultimate over.

Other than Benning, Chris Jordan, promoted to number three, put in the only other notable knock for Surrey, with some bold shots in his 31 off just 26 balls.

Surrey's main problem was a lack of boundaries, with just eight fours and a six coming in the innings compared to Middlesex's 12 fours and four sixes.

Benning's seventh 20-over half-century was uncharacteristically slow, reached off the penultimate ball of the innings.

The defeat leaves Surrey with just one win from four and struggling near the foot of the South Division table.
