Spearman runs put Glos in control

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO
Gloucester (day one, stumps): Gloucestershire 334-6 v Warwickshire

Craig Spearman fell five runs short of a century as Gloucestershire piled on 334-6 on day one against Warwickshire.

He shared an opening stand of 149 with Will Porterfield (63) before Jonathan Trott held a low catch at first slip to end his belligerent 105-ball innings.

His dismissal signalled the start of a Warwickshire fightback, inspired by James Anyon's burst of 3-1 in 13 balls.

But a 118-run partnership by Chris Taylor (72no) and Steve Snell regained the initiative for the hosts.

Ireland captain Porterfield, on his County Championship Division Two debut, survived a head-high chance to Ant Botha at square leg and an edge to wicket-keeper Tony Front before finally being caught behind off Anyon.

He fell in a quick flurry of wickets as Anyon also forced Marcus North to play on to his leg stump and had Alex Gidman caught at point.

Bad light prompted an early tea, and in the final session Taylor and Snell revived Gloucestershire's innings until Anyon again intervened with the second new ball, having Snell caught down the leg side.
