FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY SOUTH WEST Bristol: Glos 145-5 bt Hants 144-6 by five wickets
Gloucestershire moved to the top of the South West table after beating Hampshire by five wickets with two balls left in a game cut to 20 overs. They put Hampshire into bat and the visitors posted 144-6 from their allocation, Michael Lumb top-scoring with 10 fours and a six in 76. The hosts lost Hamish Marshall first ball and were soon reduced to 27-4. But Craig Spearman hit two sixes in 71 and Mark Hardinges saw them home with 44, featuring four fours and a six. Kiwi paceman Shane Bond conceded just 11 runs in four overs for Hampshire, and his three wickets included the dismissal of Spearman, caught for 71 on the mid-wicket boundary in the 17th over. Spearman's partnership of 79 in 11 overs with Hardinges had brought Gloucestershire back into contention but 39 were still needed from 23 balls when he was dismissed. Hardinges and Steve Adshead swung the match the home side's way by taking 28 off successive overs from Chris Tremlett and Dimitri Mascarenhas. Five runs were required off the last over, and a single by Adshead to mid-wicket secured the win. Gloucestershire captain Jon Lewis told BBC Radio Gloucestershire that he was surprised the game went ahead in gloomy conditions in Bristol: "I thought it was too dark to play cricket out there to be honest with you, but we came through and took a win.
"I'm really happy and the guys showed a lot of character to fight back from where we were against an extremely experienced and high-quality bowling attack. "To take that game down was a great win for us and gives us great confidence going forward in one-day cricket."
