COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Tunbridge Wells (Day two, close): Somerset 208 & 157-2 v Kent 273
Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer shared a century stand as Somerset built a lead of 92 at 157-2 after two days against Kent at Tunbridge Wells. Kent resumed at 85-3 and Martin van Jaarsveld reached 95 before he drove to extra-cover, the eighth wicket to fall, and the home side were all out for 273. Somerset lost Neil Edwards, who sliced to gully for 16 in the ninth over. Trescothick struck a fluent fifty from 90 balls but lost his skipper on 42 when he advanced down the wicket. Van Jaarsveld lost much of the strike in his stand with Darren Stevens, who made 46 before he shuffled across his stumps and was lbw. The South African was in the 40s for well over an hour before reaching fifty from 130 balls. Having made three centuries in the Friends Provident Trophy he was denied a first Championship hundred of the campaign when he drove rather carelessly at Peter Trego, who was the pick of the bowlers with 4-52. Langer had been the more circumspect of the two left-handers, with fewer attacking shots, but he was fortunate on 22 when he top-edged Robbie Joseph but former England wicket-keeper Geraint Jones could not make it into a catch. Trescothick once again reminded spectators what England have missed and played a flawless innings, with well timed shots on both sides of the wicket. He struck spinner James Tredwell for a straight six and was unbeaten on 71, the fourth time he has scored 50 or more in the Championship this season.
