FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY Essex 124 all out lost to Kent 230-7 by 106 runs
Essex followed the record-breaking feats of their last Friends Provident Trophy match with a shocking display to hand Kent a comfortable 106-run win. In bowler-friendly conditions, Kent patiently built a total of 230-7, with Justin Kemp's 51 from 86 balls and Rob Key's 41 from 65 balls the top scores. After making 391-5 at The Oval, Essex's batsmen should have been confident. But they found Yasir Arafat in stunning form, the seamer taking 4-23 from six overs as the hosts fell to 124 all out. The defeat was the first for Essex in the competition and Kent took their place on top of the south-east division table. Arafat struck with the fifth and sixth deliveries of his opening over to get rid of Mark Pettini and Ravi Bopara, both lbw. The Pakistani also removed Grant Flower and James Foster during his devastating burst, and with Azhar Mahmood getting rid of Jason Gallian, Essex found themselves in disarray at 42-5 by the end of the 10th over. There was no way back for the hosts, although tail-enders Graham Napier and Chris Wright unleashed a few belligerent strokes to help Essex to at least steer clear of complete
humiliation. Robbie Joseph provided the main support to Arafat with figures of 3-30.
