Essex rattled up their highest total in limited overs cricket to thump Surrey by 156 runs to maintain their unbeaten Friends Provident record. Mark Pettini's one-day best of 144, which included 17 fours and two sixes. and Jason Gallian's 117 propelled Essex to 391-5 at The Oval. Surrey's victory hopes ended once Mark Ramprakash went for 98. He fell leg-before to David Masters, who took a one-day best 5-17 as Surrey were dismissed for 235 in 38.2 overs. Pettini , who faced 120 balls in all, piled up an opening stand of 269 with Gallian. He took full advantage after being dropped when he had made just one as he and Gallian, whose runs came from 116 balls and included 14 fours, set a record opening stand for Essex against Surrey. Ryan ten Doeschate continued the punishment for Surrey's bowlers, blasting 60 from 31 balls. In reply, Ramprakash and Scott Newman added 94 for Surrey's second wicket as they briefly threatened at 189 off 31 overs. Usman Afzaal made 43 but received no support as wickets fell regularly.
