COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Old Trafford, day two of four (close): Lancashire 221-9 v Somerset 238

Andrew Flintoff succumbed to a golden duck as Lancashire reached 221-9, 17 behind Somerset, after a rain-hit second day of the game at Old Trafford.

Flintoff, seeking batting time ahead of the first Test on 15 May, got a superb ball from Peter Trego that pitched on off-stump, left him and took the edge.

The bowlers found swing, Mark Turner's fine yorker ousting Iain Sutcliffe and one then kept low to trap Mal Loye.

Luke Sutton and Simon Marshall shared 53 but two wickets fell after a delay.

Rain forced the start to be put back to 1230 BST and it quickly became apparent that batting would be more difficult.

In addition to Turner's impressive spell, left-armer Charl Willoughby deceived Brad Hodge as two wickets fell for one run in successive overs.

Paul Horton completed a battling half-century before falling attempting a drive, but Stuart Law made a scratchy start and soon edged behind to give Turner a third wicket.

Promising leg-spinner Michael Munday trapped Glen Chapple before tea before the eight-wicket stand between Sutton and Marshall.

After a rain delay, the players returned for four overs before stumps, and Ben Phillips bowled Sutton with a full-length ball, then Sajid Mahmood became the second golden duck of the day when the top of his middle stump was clipped.

Horton was convinced that Flintoff would soon come good with the bat.

"In the nets, he's hitting the ball as well as I've ever seen him," Horton said.

"He looks the best out of us; he's hitting the ball very hard, as he always does. He just needs games under his belt - he could get a hundred next innings."

Trego, the successful bowler who dismissed the burly all-rounder, said: "I'd just love to bowl that every ball - if I was good enough I would, it's as simple as that.

"I come from a few inches wider than normal; it was angling in and shaped away a foot - ideal.

"I just wish I could do it more often. If I knew the formula, I'd bottle it and sell it.
