COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE The Oval, day two of four (close): Surrey 537-5d v Lancashire 63-1
Afzaal got after spinner Keedy to start his Surrey career in style |
Mark Butcher and Usman Afzaal made centuries as Surrey piled on the runs on day two against Lancashire. Mark Ramprakash (118) did not last long before edging Oliver Newby behind but Butcher, dropped at mid-on on 89 off Newby, went on to make 120. Afzaal (134no), who clubbed four sixes, and Ali Brown (74no) added 160 before Surrey declared on 537-5 and Lancs lost Iain Sutcliffe in closing on 63-1. Andrew Flintoff bowled economically and beat the bat regularly without reward. The all-rounder's stint was encouraging from an England point of view but his team were unable to prevent two international discards from putting Surrey in charge. Ramprakash was undone by one from Newby that left him and Butcher should also have made an early exit when he mis-timed a pull, only for Glen Chapple to put down the chance. After he eventually edged Chapple behind and James Benning fell cheaply, Afzaal and Brown took over with some positive strokeplay. Left-arm spinner Gary Keedy and seamer Sajid Mahmood were both hit for two sixes as Afzaal stepped on the gas ahead of the declaration. Lancashire faced a tricky 15-over spell at the end of a difficult day but Sutcliffe failed to survive, edging Pedro Collins to Brown at third slip.
