Strauss fails as Middlesex toil
County Championship D2, Chelmsford, day two (close): Essex 365 v Middlesex 171 & 104-3

Andrew Strauss's lean spell with the bat continued as Middlesex were made to follow-on at Chelmsford.

The England opener was dismissed for 11 in the first innings as his side were bowled out for 171, and he made only seven in the second.

Tony Palladino, who accounted for Strauss in both innings, ended the day with five wickets overall.

Earlier, Robbie Williams claimed 5-112 on his Championship debut as Essex lost their last three wickets for 20.

Steve Finn claimed two of the three to fall to post figures of 4-61.

But Middlesex were soon in trouble when they replied, losing half their side for 51 before Ben Scott and Murali Kartik provided some backbone, adding 64 in 10 overs.

Scott struck 12 boundaries before running out of partners on 61 and the visitors were asked to bat again.

Palladino, buoyed by taking 4-48 in the first innings, removed Strauss again in identical fashion, with Varun Chopra holding the chances at second slip.

Jahid Ahmed trapped Billy Godleman leg before and bowled Ed Smith to leave Middlesex still 90 runs adrift going into the third day.
