Surrey spin pair unsettle Hants
County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day three (close): Surrey 556 v Hampshire 221 & 121-3

Surrey's spinners played the leading role as they tightened their grip against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

Chris Schofield took 5-52 as the home side were all out for 221, with India's Harbhajan Singh claiming two victims.

And Harbhajan added two more as Hampshire battled to 121-3 at the close after being forced to follow on.

James Adams provided the highlight for home fans, making 110 and then following it with an unbeaten 31 as they ended play 214 runs in arrears.

But only Nic Pothas (39) offered prolonged support in the first innings before Hampshire's last four wickets went down for 22 runs.

Schofield's form was good news for England ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa and his accuracy was underlined by two lbw decisions and an excellent ball which bowled Daren Powell for four.

The home side offered greater resistance when they came out to bat for a second time, with Michael Carberry and Brown sharing a stand of 63 before Brown, on 30, hooked a ball from Chris Jordan to Matt Nicholson at long-leg.

Carberry followed for 40 when edged a ball from Harbhajan to slip and John Crawley followed when he was bowled through the gate for his second duck of the match - his first pair since the Test at Perth on England's 1994-5 Ashes tour.

Surrey tried hard for further success in the closing overs but Adams refused to budge as he and Michael Lumb (15) saw it through to stumps.

There was a major boost for Hampshire at close of play when it was confirmed that captain Shane Warne will return to action before the end of the season.

The Australian has a muscle tear in his side but physio Andrew Nealon said: "He is making good progress...and has an outside chance of playing against Worcestershire at Kidderminster next week."
