Flintoff helps Lancs boss Tykes
Championship D1, Headingley (day one, stumps): Yorkshire 144 v Lancashire 146-2

Andrew Flintoff collected three Yorkshire scalps as Lancashire ended day one of the Roses match two runs ahead with eight wickets in hand.

Flintoff (3-38) ended the Yorkshire innings on 144 with wickets from consecutive deliveries, before Paul Horton (82no) led Lancashire's reply.

Glen Chapple (4-35) started the rot, removing both Craig White and Anthony McGrath without scoring.

Yorkshire skipper Darren Gough won the toss but his batsmen let him down.

There's still a little more in me and I can bowl faster than I am now

Little could be blamed on the pitch as White fenced at an innocuous-looking ball and McGrath offered no shot to a delivery to be out lbw.

Younis Khan was clean bowled by a fast, but hittable, full toss from Sajid Mahmood and when opener Joe Sayers (three) joined him in the pavilion after gloving to Luke Sutton down the leg side, it looked as though Yorkshire would struggle to reach three figures.

Andrew Gale and Gerard Brophy repaired some of the damage, treating the crowd to a couple of cleanly-hit boundaries before the latter went down the track to Muttiah Muralitharan and offered a catch to silly point.

Next, Adil Rashid hit a brave, counter-attacking 34 before perishing just before lunch as he clipped a ball from Chapple straight to Paul Horton at square leg.

Tim Bresnan made Yorkshire's top score of 39 before fending Flintoff to Brad Hodge at gully.

That brought Gough to the crease and, after dragging Muralitharan for four through mid-wicket, he was quickly cleaned up by a full-pitched Flintoff ball.

The England all-rounder then removed Yorkshire's last man Ajmal Shahzad lbw for a golden duck.

Flintoff said afterwards: "We started well, it was a fine performance and I came in at the end and got a few lower-order batsmen.

"I'm playing a full part in this match, so I'm batting at five and bowling as many overs as the captain asks of me.

"The ball started reversing a bit, which is something I enjoy doing and it's coming out nicely.

"There's still a little more in me and I can bowl faster than I am now, but on a wicket like this it's about building pressure and drying up runs rather than trying to blast them out."
