Jones scored his second championship century of the summer |
LV County Championship D1, Canterbury: Kent 550-9 dec v Warwickshire 43-2, day two (close)
Discarded England keeper Geraint Jones was one of three Kent batsmen to score a century on day two as Kent took charge against Warwickshire.
Jones scored 105 while ex-South Africa batsman Martin van Jaarsveld weighed in with 117 and Pakistan ODI player Yasir Arafat contributed an unbeaten 101.
Kent declared on 550-9 in the Division One match and then reduced the visitors to 43-2 at the close in Canterbury.
Darren Maddy made 23 while Ian Westwood went for 15 off the day's last ball.
The game was one of the few to survive the heavy rain over England and van Jaarsveld began the day by converting his hard-working 67 not out into three figures as batting conditions eased from Friday's graft.
There were 18 fours for the South African number three from 226 deliveries, and his fifth-wicket ally Neil Dexter (86) weighed in handsomely too in a stand of 172.
Jones posted his 149-ball hundred as he and Arafat kept up the momentum in a record Kent eighth-wicket partnership of 177.
Jones reached his hundred just before tea, with a reverse-sweep past midwicket off Harris for his 15th four.
He fell in early evening, failing to beat mid-on with an attempted hit over the top off Harris, but the tail held out long enough for Arafat to post his second championship hundred of the season, with 11 fours from 144 balls.
When Warwickshire replied captain Maddy went to an uppish square drive at Ryan McLaren, and his opening partner Westwood edged behind trying to cut off spinner James Tredwell off what became the last ball of the day.
"It's very good pitch. Taking those two wickets has put us among them a little bit, but there aren't too many demons in it - and with the batters they have to come, it's going to be a hard slog," Jones commented.
He was delighted by his own contribution with the bat and is still hoping to force his way back into the England reckoning for the winter tours to Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
"To do that I just have to pile the runs on in the second half of the year. It was a fantastic start today and I've got another eight games to go. I hope there's more to come," he added.
