Venerable Croft rescues Glamorgan
County Championship D2, Swansea, day one (close): Glamorgan 281-8 v Nottinghamshire

Former skipper Robert Croft's unbeaten 65 helped to lift Glamorgan to 281-8 after day one at Swansea.

When the former England spinner arrived at the crease his team were perilously placed at 178-7, having lost Gareth Rees to the second ball of the match.

Seven Glamorgan players were absent injured, including paceman Simon Jones.

But Croft passed 10,000 first-class runs for the Welsh county, sharing an unbroken 88 with teenager James Harris, who hit four fours in a career best 27.

After Rees chipped to mid-on, Charlie Shreck claimed his second wicket in the fifth over when Nicky Peng edged to gully.

Skipper David Hemp had reached his 50 from 100 balls in a partnership of 69 with Grant before he was well caught at slip by the redoubtable Mark Ealham, who also took two wickets.

Nottinghamshire wore black armbands in memory of their scorer for more than 20 years, Gordon Stringfellow, who died recently.
