Warwickshire on top against Hants
County Championship D1, Edgbaston, day two (close): Hampshire 121-5 v Warwickshire

Hampshire's batsmen ground out a modest 121-5 in the 50 overs available as their match at Edgbaston got started following a day one washout.

Opener Michael Brown's 39 was the best effort by any of the batsmen, while James Anyon and Tim Groenewald each picked up two wickets for Warwickshire.

Michael Carberry was still there on 24 not out at stumps, while fit-again Nic Pothas was removed late on for 22.

Naqaash Tahir, in for the injured Heath Streak, bowled 10 wicketless overs.

Shane Warne won the toss but, not for the first time this season was let down by a number of dismissals in which batsmen contributed to their downfall.

James Adams was the one exception when he fell to a genuine seam bowler's wicket, edging Anyon low to second slip for a good catch by Warwickshire captain Darren Maddy in the sixth over of the innings.

John Crawley reached 18 smoothly before whipping a half-volley to Groenewald at square-leg before Brown made a last-minute decision to play no shot to a ball that rattled his off stump.

When Alex Loudon dived to his right at mid-off to hold a checked drive from Michael Lumb, Groenewald had his second wicket.

The showery weather became a greater factor as the day dragged on and after tea Maddy removed Pothas thanks to a smart slip catch by Jonathan Trott.
