International stars bolster Tykes
County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day one (close): Hampshire 25-0 v Yorkshire 299

England captain Michael Vaughan made an elegant 72 and Pakistan batsman Younis Khan fired a century in Yorkshire's 299 against Hampshire, who closed on 25-0.

Vaughan looked in excellent touch with 11 boundaries in his three-hour knock, but was denied a century when he called Younis for a single and was sent back.

Younis struck 14 fours before he was sixth out for 106, but after Adil Rashid's 54 the innings folded.

Rashid was given two overs with the ball but the Hants openers held out.

After a partnership of 99 between Younis and Rashid, James Bruce and James Tomlinson ripped through the Yorkshire tail taking 5-17 between them in nine overs.

Younis was trapped lbw on the back foot and teenage prodigy Rashid recklessly lofted to long-leg.

Vaughan, whose top score in the World Cup was 79 in the final match against West Indies, was relatively pleased with his fluent 72 at the Rose Bowl.

"I felt in good nick," he said. "The ball moved around a lot early on but I thought I played well and I am only sorry I wasn't able to go on."

Commenting on the incident that led to his dismissal he said: "I thought there was a run there but when I was sent back by Younis I knew I was in trouble. But these things happen."
