County Championship D2, Lord's, day one (close): Middlesex 258 v Northamptonshire 70-4
Johan van der Wath took 6-49 on his Championship debut as Middlesex were bowled out for 258 by Northamptonshire.
The South African paceman bowled Ben Hutton and Nick Compton in his first spell, and later returned to have top scorer Billy Godleman caught behind.
Godleman, who provided Middlesex's main resistance, hit 77 - including 11 fours - to add to his maiden first-class century last week and was last man out.
But in reply, Northants lost early wickets as they reached 70-4 at stumps.
Chris Silverwood bowled a lively evening spell from the pavilion end and removed opener Chris Rogers - while Stephen Peters, David Sales and keeper Riki Wessels had all been dismissed by close of play.
Godleman, fresh from scoring an unbeaten 113 against Somerset last week, is yet to score fewer than 55 in five first-class innings.
The teenager had given one chance, when he was dropped down the leg side by Wessels off Lance Klusener when he had 66.
His main support came from Tim Murtagh, who made 40 before becoming another Van der Wath victim.
