Glamorgan fall short at Taunton
Friends Provident Trophy, Taunton: Somerset 310-9 (50 overs) bt Glamorgan 286-8 (50 overs) by 24 runs
Somerset 2pts, Glamorgan 0pts

Glamorgan battled hard but fell 24 runs short as Somerset won their opening Friends Provident Trophy game.

Marcus Trescothick (36 off 20 balls) gave the hosts a rapid start, while Cameron White (54) and Craig Kieswetter (69 not out) made half-centuries.

England paceman Simon Jones took 3-56 in Somerset's eventual total of 310-9.

But despite a century stand by Michael Powell (69) and David Hemp (48), 88 off the last 10 overs proved too much for Glamorgan as Peter Trego took 4-54.

The Welsh county did have five wickets remaining going into those last 10 overs - but suffered a double blow when they lost Mark Wallace (27) and Ben Wright (40) off consecutive balls to leave them 232-7.

Some lusty blows from Robert Croft, who hit six fours in his 37 not out, were not enough for the Dragons.

Trescothick had survived an early slip chance as he and captain Justin Langer set about the Glamorgan attack, sharing a fifty stand before both were caught.

But they had teenage wicket-keeper Kieswetter to thank for batting fluently and pushing the total beyond 300 after they had reached 217-7 after Ian Blackwell was caught at long-on for 40.
