Spin makes difference for Surrey
Twenty20 Cup, The Oval: Surrey 75-4 (8.5 overs) beat Hampshire 72-8 (10 overs) by six wickets

Spin bowlers Nayan Doshi and Chris Schofield shared five wickets as Surrey beat Hampshire by six wickets in a rain-reduced Twenty20 game at The Oval.

Only 10 overs per side was possible with Hampshire restricted to 72-8 as Doshi took 3-8 and Schofield 2-16.

England newcomer Dimitri Mascarenhas managed only three but later picked up the vital wicket of Ali Brown for 31.

It was not enough, however, as Azhar Mahmood's unbeaten 21 saw Surrey home with seven balls to spare.

The 2003 winners had to wait until the fourth over of Hampshire's innings for their first success after Mascarenhas, leading the visitors in the absence of Shane Warne, won the toss and chose to bat first.

Michael Carberry (20) and Michael Lumb (19) gave Hampshire a healthy tempo but once Lumb had been bowled by a full length ball from Jade Dernbach, their decline was rapid.

Adam Voges was deceived by Doshi and stumped for one and Carberry was caught at deep square leg off Schofield, who then took a simple return catch as Mascarenhas top edged an attempted pull.

Doshi bowled Chris Tremlett and had Greg Lamb caught behind with successive deliveries and the Hampshire innings ended with another double as Sean Ervine was lbw to Mahmood for 14, playing across the line, and Nic Pothas was run out.

Surrey made a solid start in reply but James Benning (11) and Mark Ramprakash were both run out, the latter beaten by a direct hit without facing a single delivery.

But Brown hit two sixes before he was caught at point and Rikki Clarke helped Mahmood add 20 for the fourth wicket to carry Surrey to within six runs of their target.

Chris Tremlett struck a consolation blow by bowling Clarke for four, but Mahmood and Jon Batty completed the formalities in the next over.
