Benham efforts earn Warne praise
Shane Warne
Warne took the final two wickets of the day to clinch victory
Hampshire captain Shane Warne hailed Chris Benham after his century helped them beat Glamorgan and earn promotion to Division One of the Pro40 League.

"That was a very special innings but I have high hopes for Chris and it did not surprise me," said Warne after Benham's 158 in their 265-9.

He added: "I see him as a future captain of this club and he has a good head on his shoulders.

"I have a lot more to give him and I think he has a lot more to give us."

Warne's side claimed a 151-run win over Glamorgan to replace them in Pro40 Division One.

After Bentam inspired them to a useful total, the bowling of James Bruce and Sean Ervine led them to a comfortable victory, much to Warne's delight.

"One of our goals this season was to reach the First Division and this is what we have achieved," said the Australian.

"We lost only two matches and played some good cricket. I know how much it hurt the players and the club to be relegated so it is good to be back.

"We seem to be better in knock-out-type competitions and this was a cup final of sorts.

"When I came to England for the start of this season I felt we were good enough to also challenge for the County Championship and to come third a year after coming second is no mean achievement.

"We had our opportunities to do even better but we were not quite good enough to grab them. Next season I hope we can win the championship."

Glamogan captain David Hemp was disappointed with the way his team surrendered their Pro-40 First Division status.

"A lot of it is to do with confidence," he said.

"We let Hampshire get away at the start of their innings and we left ourselves with a huge task.

"You have to make the most of the first 15 overs, we had to do that on a used wicket and it didn't work for us.

"We lost the last three games to get drawn into this relegation battle."
