County Championship D1, Headingley, day two (close): Yorkshire 677-7d v Durham 203-6Darren Lehmann fell two runs short of the highest ever score by a Yorkshire batsman as the Tykes took charge of the relegation decider against Durham.
The Australian, in his farewell match for the club, reached 339, the highest score at Headingley, and just short of George Hirst's 341 at Leics in 1905.
But Lehmann and Michael Lumb (98) did share a club record fourth wicket stand of 358 before they declared on 677-7.
Durham closed day two a distant 474 runs behind at 203-6.
Lehmann did pass his personal highest, eclipsing the 301 he made for South Australia in the last domestic Australian season.
Lumb was denied a third century of the campaign when he was caught at second slip, while Lehmann added only a single after lunch before playing across the line to spinner Paul Wiseman and departing to a warm ovation.
Needing 528 to avoid the follow-on, Durham lost Jimmy Maher in the third over but Gary Scott and Gary Park shared a 150 partnership.
However, three wickets in four balls from Deon Kruis left the innings in tatters, and when spin prodigy Adil Rashid took the sixth wicket it ensured Yorkshire would not be relegated if they win the match.
"I was told I was getting close to Yorkshire's highest individual score but I have been playing too long to feel nervous," Lehmann said after his marathon innings.
"I was not too worried about failing to overtake George Hirst's 341 because I just wanted to rattle on and put Yorkshire into as strong a position as possible, but I am very proud to have made the biggest score at Headingley."
