Cork heroics maintain Lancs hopes
County Championship D1, Rose Bowl day two (stumps): Lancashire 438 & 8-1 v Hants 215

Former England all-rounder Dominic Cork took four wickets in 14 balls as Lancashire closed day two against Hants 231 runs ahead at 8-1 second time out.

Lancs began needing another 67 to claim the final batting point but lost Luke Sutton in the first over.

But Tom Smith and Murali Kartik helped them to a total of 438 with a stand of 88 for the ninth wicket.

The final wicket of Cork's haul was former Lancs batsman John Crawley, who top-scored with 63 from 97 balls.

England paceman James Anderson bowled three spells but failed to take a wicket in his 10 overs, which cost 38.

He contributed by catching Sean Ervine at square-leg and running out last man James Tomlinson with a fine throw from point.

Cork admitted the team's efforts may be in vain if Sussex go on to beat Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

"If Sussex win their match and the title, congratulations to them," he said.

"They will have proved themselves to be the best team in England over a full season, but I am very proud of what we have done."
