NatWest Pro40 D1, Riverside: Durham 205-4 (39 overs) beat Essex 201-8 (40 overs) by 6 wickets Essex celebrated after taking the title at the Riverside |
Essex clinched their second straight one-day league title despite a six-wicket defeat to Durham. The Eagles' Pro40 crown was confirmed as rivals Sussex slipped to defeat against Notts at Trent Bridge.
Phil Mustard's career-best 84 in an opening stand of 152 from 29 overs with Jimmy Maher (70) was not enough to save the Dynamos from relegation.
Essex were in trouble at 12-3 in the sixth over before Andy Flower saved face with an innings of 81.
Durham's relegation was certain after Lancashire, who went into the final weekend third-from-bottom, beat Glamorgan at Old Trafford.
Captain Ronnie Irani expressed pride in his Essex side, saying: "Durham outplayed us but we've had a great season.
"We've played well in all forms of one-day cricket this year and I think we deserve some silverware.
"I'm proud of my boys. We've got one or two guys representing England and I hope one or two will do in the future.
"Our one-day form is good and we've got a chance of going up in the Championship as well."
