Northants on top despite collapse
County Championship Division Two, Taunton (day one, close): Northamptonshire 326; Somerset 29-2

Chris Rogers hit a rapid century before Northants self-destructed on day one of the Championship match at Taunton.

The Australian left-hander stroked 128. as the visitors cruised to 260-2 at one point, but six wickets fell for 11 runs before an eventual 326 all out.

That left the hosts 14 overs to face before the close and they reached 29-2, losing Matt Wood and Neil Edwards.

Andy Caddick continued as Somerset skipper, despite the return of Ian Blackwell, and took 4-76.

Blackwell (2-63) had been out for four months out following shoulder surgery.

Whether he, as Caddick did, would have opted to bowl first at winning the toss, will probably never be known.

But Rogers and Stephen Peters (63) hardly played a false shot in the morning session and it was Blackwell who offered the most threat with his left-arm spin.

Meanwhile, Somerset have re-signed their former pace bowler Steffan Jones, who has enjoyed a successful season with Derbyshire, on a three-year contract.

Jones played for Somerset from 1997-2003 before leaving to join Northants.
