County Championship Division One, Hove (stumps, day three): Sussex 439 & 294-6 v Lancashire 342Centuries from Richard Montgomerie and Murray Godwin put Sussex in a strong position to try to force victory at Hove against title rivals Lancashire.
Having dismissed the visitors for 342, with Jason Lewry taking 6-68, the hosts had reached 294-6 by the close in their second innings, a lead of 391.
Montgomerie made exactly 100 and Godwin 103, while Gary Keedy claimed 4-80.
Earlier Stuart Law was out for 130 and Gareth Cross 68 as Lancashire lost their last six wickets for 65.
Sussex, a point behind leaders Lancashire at the outset having played a game more, are now well placed for an early declaration on the final day.
Two weeks ago, captain Chris Adams decided not to declare when they held a dominant lead of 431 heading into the last day against Kent - and they missed out on a win.
But with spinner Mushtaq Ahmed available to bowl after he sat out Friday's
morning session to protect a thigh injury, he may decide now is the time to be bold.
"Now it is about how brave we want to be," said Sussex coach Mark Robinson as he reflected on an excellent day for the hosts.
"We could kill the game, bat too long and be too conservative. But we want to win this game. All you can do is go out and be aggressive."
