Powell knock inspires Glamorgan
County Championship Division Two, Cheltenham College (stumps, day one): Gloucestershire v Glamorgan 346-2Michael Powell hit his third century in 10 days as Glamorgan built a strong position against Gloucestershire.

He cracked 25 fours and two sixes in a majestic 176 not out as the visitors closed on 346-2 at Cheltenham College.

David Hemp provided good support with a patient 102 as the duo made light of the early loss of Gareth Rees for one.

New Zealand star Brendon McCullum was forced to retire hurt after making only four but Hemp, Powell and Ryan Watkins (34no) ensured the day was Glamorgan's.

Powell passed 1,000 runs for the season as he pummelled an attack badly missing Glos captain Jon Lewis, who is set to return from Manchester if he is not selected by England for the second Test against Pakistan.

The home side also dropped Australian star Ian Harvey but did not say why.

McCullum, playing his last game for the county, had to retire after been struck on the wrist by Steve Kirby, who then bowled debutant Gareth Rees.

The next wicket came 70 overs and 238 runs later as Gloucestershire struggled on an easy-paced track.

Meanwhile, in a ceremony at the opening of the festival, the hosts officially took over the famous back badge of the Gloucestershire regiment.

Their players will now wear the badge, awarded in 1801 in Egypt, on the back of their caps.
