County Championship D1, Southgate, day one (stumps): Yorkshire 337-5 v Middlesex

Michael Vaughan's 99 overshadowed a career-best 144 from Michael Lumb on day one of Yorkshire's Championship match against Middlesex at Southgate.

Yorkshire were in trouble after Chris Silverwood took 2-13 in his first six overs against his former club.

Vaughan dug in but was caught off Jamie Dalrymple one short of his first Championship century in three years.

Lumb reached his century from 245 balls before Silverwood trapped him lbw, the Tykes going to stumps at 337-5.

Vaughan did not look fully fit running between the wickets but spent more than four hours at the crease.

News of his innings will be welcomed by England coach Duncan Fletcher, who hinted Vaughan was in the running to return to play at some stage in the forthcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka.

Vaughan said: "I managed to hit a few more boundaries after lunch and did not have to run as much - but I'm pleased to be in decent touch."

Middlesex skipper Ben Hutton took his place in the field despite a club announcement on the eve of the match that he would play in the second XI in search of form.
