Lancashire close in on C&G final
C&G Trophy, Edinburgh: Lancashire 168-5 (40 overs) bt Scotland 167 (50 overs) by five wickets

Lancashire moved a step closer to the final of the C&G Trophy after defeating Scotland by five wickets at The Grange.

Veteran paceman Glenn Chapple claimed 4-23 as the hosts were all out for 167 off the last ball of their 50 overs.

But Paul Hoffmann bowled an economical spell to claim 2-24 off his 10 overs as the visitors slumped to 28-3 in reply.

Stuart Law hit 78 and put on 128 with Luke Sutton to steady them and Sutton was there on 53 when the target was reached at the end of the 40th over.

The Scots struggled on a difficult track following the early dismissals of Australian duo Corey Richards and Ian Moran.

Only a patient and battling 48 from Gavin Hamilton staved off a total collapse, while Colin Smith and Ian Stanger were the only other batsmen to pass 30.

Smith was later forced to leave the field with a back strain, handing over the wicket-keeping gloves to Dougie Lockhart.

Hoffmann gave Scotland hope when he trapped trapped Mal Loye lbw for 15 before Mark Chilton got a leading edge off Dewald Nel to spoon a catch to Hamilton.

When Hoffman bowled Brad Hodge, an upset seemed likely but Law and Sutton turned the tide.
