Taylor treble destroys Middlesex
County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day one (stumps): Hampshire 262-4 v Middlesex 98

Michael Carberry congratulates Billy Taylor on his hat-trick against Middlesex
Taylor destroyed Middlesex with a magnificent spell of bowling
Billy Taylor's hat-trick helped skittle Middlesex for a new Championship low score at Hampshire's Rose Bowl.

Taylor had Nick Compton caught before bowling Paul Weekes and Ben Scott on the way to career-best figures of 6-32, shooting the visitors out for only 98.

James Adams and Michael Carberry fell cheaply but Hants were 60 ahead when John Crawley (55) was fourth man out.

Dominic Thornely (58) and Nic Pothas (56) then piled on the misery as the hosts closed strongly on 262-4.

Southampton-born Taylor's performance was made all the more remarkable by the fact that this was his first Championship appearance for 10 months.

He was recalled to the side because of injuries to Richard Logan and Chris Tremlett and responded with a devastating display.

There were no demons in the pitch this time and Thornely and Pothas showed where Middlesex had failed.
