Smith burst helps Lancs win again
C&G Trophy, New Road: Lancashire 248-5 (50 overs) bt Worcestershire 129 (42.1 overs)

Tom Smith took three wickets in an over to help Lancashire crush Worcestershire by 119 runs in the C&G Trophy.

Stuart Law struck 70 off 62 balls and Mal Loye hit 64 as the visitors made 248-5, with Daryl Mitchell taking 4-42.

Worcestershire never got going and Smith's triple strike to remove Stephen Davies, Gareth Batty and Roger Sillence in his seventh over left them on 74-7.

They were all out in the 43rd over to make it two out of two for Lancashire and a first defeat for the home side.

The ball seamed around for most of the day but the difference in the end was the visitors' determination to play their shots.

We let ourselves down but Lancashire bowled well

Loye was particularly creative as he collected eight fours and a leg-side six, before Law and Kyle Hogg, who blasted 24 off just 14 balls, provided impetus towards the end.

Their bowlers then made better use of the pitch, with all four seamers miserly, and the hosts failed to come up with answers.

Skipper Vikram Solanki admitted: "Full credit to Lancashire, they played well at the start, bided their time and got a couple of partnerships together to make a competitive total.

"They held their own and didn't lose the early wickets we hoped for and ended up with an above-par score.

"We should have got close but let ourselves down, but Lancashire bowled well in the conditions."

Opposite number Mark Chilton said: "It was an excellent effort all-round. We new there would be seam movement and we tried to get through the early overs and leave wickets in hand.

"The last 10 overs proved very productive and the bowlers worked really hard - they kept things simple.

"The wickets have been nibbling around a bit, they've used the juice in them and got good figures."
