Twenty20 Cup semi-final, Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire 176-6 bt Surrey 139 by 37 runs Giant seamer Shreck tore through Surrey's top order |
Nottinghamshire produced a magnificent display in the field to stun favourites Surrey in their Twenty20 Cup semi-final and book a clash with Leicestershire. David Hussey hit four sixes in his 42 and Mark Ealham 18 off seven balls as Notts posted a challenging 176-6.
Charlie Shreck then took 3-33 and Ryan Sidebottom conceded only seven off four overs as Surrey collapsed to 59-6.
Jon Batty prevented total embarrassment with 58 but they were still shot out well short on 139 with five balls left.
It was as emphatic a performance as Notts' vociferous fans would have wanted on their own ground and very little went right for 2003 winners Surrey.

Graeme Swann and Stephen Fleming seized on width offered to them by Tim Murtagh and Rikki Clarke to rattle up 60 in seven overs.
It was a different story when spinners Anil Kumble and Nayan Doshi came on, with the latter varying his pace and extracting turn to keep the scoring down.
Fleming played around one from left-armer Doshi (1-28) to give the left-armer his 21st wicket and break Adam Hollioake's tournament record.
Chris Read and Hussey pushed the scoring along, with the Australian launching some mighty blows off Doshi, Kumble and Surrey's third slow bowler Ian Salisbury.
However, when Hussey played on to Kumble's last delivery to give the Indian fine figures of 2-26 it looked like Notts might fall short
Hussey's aggressive innings gave Notts momentum |
But Ealham clubbed Azhar Mahmood straight down the ground and high over mid-wicket to end the innings with a flourish and Surrey were soon in the mire.
Ali Brown miscued Shreck to Will Smith at long-on and James Benning, batting with a dislocated finger, was cleaned up in the same over.
Skipper Mark Butcher was run out going for a reckless single, while Clarke played all over a straight one from Shreck.
Mark Ramprakash was dropped twice and survived a run-out chance before another mix-up cost him and Smith took a spectacular catch in the deep to remove Mahmood.
Batty should have been stumped by Read, who lost a tooth in the process, and he made the most of his reprieve with some powerful drives.

But that innings and a six-run penalty for slow over-rates mattered little as Notts polished off the tail to give themselves an all-East Midlands affair to look forward to.
Skipper Fleming said: "I'm very pleased, we had the toughest draw on paper and in a way it helped us.
"We got a start with the bat which helped the hitters later in the innings and we were able to take risks.
"The bowling was magnificent and some of those catches were amazing - Will Smith held on to a couple of screamers."
Butcher felt his side had been at nowhere near their best, saying: "We weren't at the races really.
"We felt at the half-way point that 177 certainly wasn't out of our reach but when you get off to a start like that you're behind the eight ball.
"I felt we gave it away a little bit early on in the run chase. If we'd managed to stick in there a bit longer and wait for the ball to get older we might have had a chance.
