Naved burst ends Glamorgan hopes
C&G Trophy, Cardiff: Sussex 257-8 (50 overs) beat Glamorgan 160 (38.2 overs) by 97 runs

Rana Naved and Mushtaq Ahmed showed why they are one of the most potent bowling combinations in county cricket as Sussex beat Glamorgan by 97 runs.

Their third successive C&G Trophy win came by a 97-run margin as Glamorgan were bowled out for 160.

Naved took 5-30 in eight overs with the new ball and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed finished off the tail, claiming 3-36.

Sussex had earlier totalled 257-8 after a stand of 126 between Michael Yardy (88) and Carl Hopkinson (61).

The visitors had struggled at the outset against a Glamorgan attack strengthened by the return of David Harrison, who was playing his first game of the season following a foot injury.

He sent England one-day opener Matt Prior on his way for a first ball duck and also won an lbw decision against Richard Montgomerie (23).

Murray Goodwin (44) steadied the innings before falling to spinner Dean Cosker and Yardy and Hopkinson raised the tempo with some excellent running between the wickets.

Both fell to Alex Wharf, who took 3-43 from eight overs, but a target of 258 looked a tough one for Glamorgan.

So it proved as they crumbled to 48-6 with Naved's accuracy, ability to vary his pace and movement off the seam confounding the top order.

David Hemp made 23 before he was caught off all-rounder Luke Wright, but the sternest resistance came from Richard Grant and Harrison, who added 55 for the eighth wicket.

They were parted when Grant was caught for 36 by Goodwin off Mushtaq, who then removed Harrison for 30 and ended the game by bowling Andrew Davies for 18.
