Usman Afzaal and Riki Wessels made centuries, the former his third in as many matches, as Northants piled up 414-7 on day one against Durham.

Afzaal (119) and Wessels (107) put on 185 runs for the fifth wicket at the Riverside after Rob White had set the tone with 11 fours in his 84.

Durham skipper Paul Collingwood,back from England's Ashes party, picked ujp the wicket of Afzaal.

But Liam Plunkett was the pick of the home attack, claiming 5-86.

If Northants take maximum points from this match and the visit of Yorkshire next week, Durham would need seven points from this, their last game, to ensure promotion.
