Sussex ended their Twenty20 Cup campaign with their first win, but it was Essex who were celebrating a quarter-final place. Sussex took a methodical approach to overhauling the Eagles' 134-8 - and got there for the loss of just one wicket and with three overs remaining.
Matt Prior (68) and Chris Adams (38) shared an unbroken stand of 112 under the Chelmsford floodlights.
Despite the defeat, Essex progressed as one of the best third-placed sides.
