One-day results could have counted towards the Championship |
English county bosses have turned down a proposal to combine four-day and one-day competitions into a single league. Instead the First Class Forum will set up its own review group to explore restructuring of the domestic game.
FCF chairman Mike Soper will head the new group, which will recommend changes in time for the 2006 season.
He told BBC Sport last month: "The Championship is a great competition and to muddle it up with one-day games seems completely stupid."
The decision will come as a blow to the England and Wales Cricket Board, whose own domestic structure review group came up with the proposals.
In a complicated plan, they hoped to reduce the season to 12 County Championship matches per team but increase one-day cricket.
However ECB director of cricket operations John Carr, who pioneered the idea, will be part of the new review team.
FCF representatives will now look again at the development of Twenty20 cricket, the Totesport League format - including the extension of floodlit games - scheduling and promotion and relegation.
Counties will continue to be allowed two overseas players for next season, pending the outcome of the review.
