County Championship D1, Canterbury, day one (stumps): Kent 405-7 v Sussex Ed Smith hit his highest score of the season as Kent made a brisk start against Sussex at Canterbury. Smith, who has suffered some poor form since playing three Tests last summer, hit 166 to set the home side on their way to maximum bonus points at 405-7.
Alex Loudon joined him in a second-wicket stand of 197, hitting 55 from 128 deliveries.
And Matthew Walker kept the Sussex attack toiling late in the day with an unbeaten 83 from 154 balls.
Smith had struck five boundaries in reaching 31 when he was dropped at gully by Murray Goodwin off James Kirtley - the only chance he was to offer.
These sides last met just a week ago, with Sussex claiming an innings victory.
Seam bowler Martin Saggers missed out on the rematch, suffering from tendonitis and both Robert Key and Geraint Jones were both rested at England's request.
The visitors are without spinner Mark Davis, with a knee strain so seamer Luke Wright replaces him.
Left-arm seamer Jason Lewry is expected to return later this month after undergoing knee surgery.
