County Championship D1, Chelmsford (close): Essex 7-0 v Kent 381 David Fulton fell seven runs short of a century as Kent racked up the runs but also lost wickets regularly against Essex.
Fulton was out for 93 and fellow opener Michael Carberry made 50 as they put on 138 for the first wicket.
Wicket-keeper Geraint Jones was also in inspired form with the bat, although he was run out on 84.
Off-spinner James Middlebrook did the damage with the ball, taking 6-112 off 32 overs, as Kent were all out for 381.
Nasser Hussain and Darren Robinson were at the crease at the close of play, four and three not out respectively.
