Gloucestershire made a statement of intent for the Twenty20 semi-finals, hitting a competition record 221 in their 53-run victory over Glamorgan.

Craig Spearman led the way with 88 for the Gladiators, who had qualified for the next round before this match.

The New Zealander's innings took just 39 balls, including seven fours and as many sixes.

And there was also a pair of brisk 36s from Chris Taylor and Alex Gidman as the home side topped the previous best, set by Yorkshire against Durham last week, by 23 runs.

Luckless Glamorgan, who have won just a single match in this competition despite their one-day reputation, could managed just 168-7 in reply.

Veteran Matthew Maynard again top-scored with 69, taking his aggregate for ther competition to 242 - the highest among England-qualified players.

And there were two wickets apiece form Mike Smith, Ian Harvey and Martyn Ball.
