County Championship D1, AMP Oval, day three of four: Surrey 216 and 200-4 need another 104 runs to beat Lancashire 320 & 200

  View scorecard

Mark Ramprakash will spend Friday night wondering if his unbeaten 71 against Lancashire has done enough to warrant selection for the first Test.

The former Middlesex man's patient knock came at a critical point in the match after Azhar Mahmood's eight for 61 ensured Surrey would be chasing a target that would not be too far out of reach.

The day started with Lancashire 124 for five, all five wickets on Thursday evening falling to Azhar.

Aussie Stuart Law was the first Friday casualty, lbw to Azhar for 39.

The Pakistani international then had Glenn Chapple and Kyle Hogg caught behind by Alec Stewart for single figure scores.

Ormond's input

At that point, Azhar had all eight wickets, while Stewart had 11 dismissals in the match.

But Jimmy Ormond was determined to get in on the act and it was he who wrapped up the innings.

First John Wood was lbw to the England fringe bowler for a duck, before Ormond returned to end an obstinate final-wicket partnership of 19 between Warren Hegg and Gary Keedy.

Captain Hegg was the final man to fall - bowled for 43.

Measured approach

Surrey's run chase, though interrupted by the odd wicket, has been a measured one and they will expect to win on Saturday.

England men Mark Butcher and Graham Thorpe got starts but couldn't go on, but Ian Ward 's 37 was an important contribution.

Stewart, who will know before he the restart of play whether or not he will play in the Lord's Test, will re-join Ramprakash on 25 not out on Saturday morning.

The pair have added 71 vital runs to date.
