Mahmood took three wickets in the morning session, including last man Warren Hegg for 43, as Lancs added 76 runs for the loss of five wickets. It was the Pakistani's best return at first-class level. At lunch, Surrey were 11 for no loss and needing a further 293 for victory. Hampshire will be forced to bat again for victory after Kent grimly resisted defeat at the Rose Bowl. At lunch, Kent were 236 for six in their second innings after being forced to follow on on Thursday. Their lead stood at nine runs. Ed Smith was one of two wickets to fall in the morning session for 77, but 'keeper Paul Nixon picked up where Smith left off to be unbeaten on 54 at the interval. England opener Marcus Trescothick set Somerset on the path to victory against Yorkshire at Taunton.
Trescothick remained unbeaten on 48 and Peter Bowler 25 with Somerset requiring another 160 runs for victory over the reigning champions. Warwickshire were on the verge of following on as their first innings went from bad to worse against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Resuming on 36 for three, the visitors crashed to 152 for nine at lunch in response to Leicestershire's mammoth 523. Michael Bevan and Matthew Whiley took three wickets each for the hosts, but only South Africa skipper Shaun Pollock could offer anything by way of resistance to be unbeaten on 37. Division Two Nottinghamshire were on course for victory over at Trent Bridge after bowling Essex out for 270 in the morning session.
At lunch, Notts were 53 for one needing an additional 134 runs for victory. Northamptonshire continued their amazing turnaround at County Ground as Derbyshire went wicket-less in the morning session. Following on after the disaster of their first innings, Northants went to lunch on 213 without loss with both Mike Hussey and Mal Loye unbeaten on 101. They still trailed by 194 runs at the interval, but Derbyshire's hopes of a swift resolution to this fixture were kicked into touch by the opening pair's outstanding stand. An unbeaten half-century to Dean Hemp highlighted a profitable morning session for Glamorgan at New Road. The visitors went to lunch with a 109-run lead over Worcestershire on 121 for two in their second innings. Opener Hemp was unbeaten on 56 after witnessing the departures of captain Stephen James and Ian Thomas, both victims of Alamgir Sheriyar. |
