An eighth-wicket stand of 75 between Mark Wallace and Michael Kasprowicz ensured Glamorgan still have three wickets remaining going into the final day against Derbyshire.

But Dominic Cork's side are still 223 runs ahead of the Welsh outfit, who have it all to do on the fourth day at Cardiff.

And the home side were helped by the start being delayed on the last day due to rain.

Sunday started with Cork showing his attacking intentions and the England star combined well with Dominic Hewson to push Derbyshire onwards.

When Cork was clean bowled by a fantastic yorker from Darren Thomas, Karl Krikken came to the wicket and carried on where his captain had left off before top-edging an attempted sweep off Robert Croft to David Hemp .

Jason Kerr replaced Krikken at the crease, while Hewson pushed on to bring up his century in the 128th over. Cork chose that point to declare on 462 for six - a commanding lead of 504.

Derbyshire bowler Lian Wharton

Glamorgan needed to make a solid start if they had any chance of saving the game, but they suffered a pre-lunch blow in the sixth over when Hemp edged a Kevin Dean delivery to Cork.

Derbyshire struck again soon after lunch when Cork defeated Adrian Dale for pace and Glamorgan were struggling on 39 for two.

Opener Steve James, so often a rock at the top of the Glamorgan batting line-up, gained confidence as the match progressed and gained good support from Michael Powell.

The partnership was worth 63 when Lian Wharton trapped Powell lbw with a good-length ball.

The experienced Matthew Maynard replaced Powell but he only managed six runs before edging a ball from Cork onto his stumps.

England star Robert Croft followed Maynard back to the pavilion in the next over, edging a Wharton delivery to Cork.

Glamorgan's hopes rested firmly with James, who continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but his brave stand came to end on 78 when he was adjudged lbw while attempting to sweep Wharton.

Thomas offered brief resistance before Luke Sutton took a sharp catch to leave the hosts reeling at 206 for seven.

However, Wallace (84 not out) and Australian Kasprowicz (32 not out) added an unbroken 75 for the eighth wicket to take the match into a fourth day.
