After recording only one victory in the whole of 2001, Derbyshire look set to record a win in their first match of the new championship season.

The Peakites staged a remarkable turnaround with the bat after day one against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens had seen 18 wickets fall.

The hosts resumed on 163 for eight but Derbyshire skipper Dominic Cork polished off the tail with only 12 further runs added to finish with an impressive 6-51 for the innings.

That gave the visitors an important lead of 42 in what looked to be a low-scoring match.

Fruitful partnerships

However, Derbyshire openers Steve Stubbings and Michael Di Venuto turned the game on its head with an opening stand of 96.

Di Venuto in particular took to the Glamorgan bowlers, slamming eleven fours in his 63-ball 62.

Stubbings was more patient but he found another able partner in South African-born debutant Andrew Gait as the pair added a further 182 for the second wicket.

Gait eventually fell for 80, followed almost immediately by Stubbings who fell just seven short of his career best with 128 from 233 balls.

At the close, Derbyshire had edged up to 353 for four, a lead of 395, with Dominic Hewson not out on 35.
